Evaluation (pans labyrinth)

After reading the key features of evaluations in the Lunsford book, made me think in my head that the movie Pans Labyrinth the 3 time award winner is great movie because it's really unique on what it shows in the movie, but the really wierd thing is its not really known at all. How everything changes so much, and there are a lot scenes that gives you hints on whats going to happen next. Such as the lighting, the disobedience and what the girl had to do for missions to help the family problems and she never had a problem doing so.

What I mean by there are a lot of things in the movie Pans Labyrinth that is really unique is by how they show the lighting going to dark, which you know something not so good or evil is going to happen and when the lights go on or gets lighter that shows that something good is going to happen. For an example whenever the captain was about to do something the coloring of the movie went to dark because something cruel was about to happen.

Del Toro, the director of the movie makes all his movies in really exciting ways, very adventurous with a lot of action. The cool thing that he does is, it seems that he grabs sceens from other movies and connects them into his movie. Such as the lord of the rings, batman where the man looked like the joker when the side of his mouth was cut open. Also alice in the wonderland connects a lot to this movie. In the movie Ofelia did a lot of exploring and things that are away from her mother, and I feel that she should have spent more time with her mother and listened to her more than she did. The reason why I say that is if you know your mother is dying and having a hard time because she is pregnant, you only have one mother in your life and you should spend a lot of time with her.

One of the things that I noticed when the movie came to an end, during the movie Ofelia had a lot of moods and they changed so much by going bad to good. She also was not very comfortable living around with the captain, but when she went to the underworld when she was killed by the captain everything about her changed, she died but her soul was still alive and the lights became really bright and she became happy which was really different to see. Part of the reason why she was happy again was because she accomplished all those missions that were set for and most of all she was able to see her father for the first time.

This family had a lot to go through such as, the mother trying to get Ofelia calm to live with her and the general. The general was a really mean person, by killing a lot of people for no reason and killing people in ways that are really harsh. It was really unfair for Ofelia because she really couldnt do anything with her mother because she was always sick and she didnt like the captain at all because he was being really fierce to Ofelias mother. The captain didnt want Ofelias mother, what he really wanted was the baby which is really sad, because he didnt want to have anything to do with Ofelias mother in the future after the baby was born.

  1. Yeah. That's a dysfunctional family. Very tense and uncomfortable. No wonder Ofelia was eager to escape in fantasy because she couldn't take her reality.

  2. Well indeed, it's odd that this movie isn't well known even though Pan's Labyrinth received 3 academy awards. Del Toro is a genius with this kind of movies. He loves to bend rules in cinema and it obviously showed that in Pan's Labyrinth.

  3. I agree, the Captain always seemed to make the whole scene darken. But towards the end he was engulfed in fire as if it was following him.. I think that was an interesting change in color-theme.

  4. I agree with everything you said. This movie is really abstract like visual art. I also liked how you explained the light change from the movie to the point where Ofelia dies. It's very odd
