Final Blog

Many of the other Universities that we all visited are a lot nicer than Gallaudet. We all wish that Gallaudet had this and that like the other Univerities had. The big thing you have to think about at first is, that the schools that we visited are huge D1 schools. Their budget on spending on new things is a lot more than ours. Thats the problem we have here at Gallaudet, we dont have a big money budget where we could spend on things that would make Gallaudet look a lot nicer. We need to start having a lot more fundraisers, sponsorships and other ways to raise money so we can make it an attractive University. Thats what the people are starting to do now here at Gallaudet, especially the Athletic Department by congregating with eachother and finding ways to raise money. To make Gallaudet a nice looking place!

Talking about the people here not trying to congregate with one another, by getting together and try to make this place look a lot nicer like the other Universities. For an example, the Athletic Department right now is trying to get the baseball team a beautiful field by getting all turf, a fence, stands, nice batting cages but its hard for them to do it because of the cost. Gallaudet doesn't have the money just yet to add new nice things to the campus. Later in the future I think it will happen, because of the amount of students that are comming here for schooling and sports. Gallaudet someday will be a bigger University with a lot more students and will become more well off with money so we can add things to Gallaudet to make it a place that attracts other students to want to come here. Thats what we realized about George Mason University, they have so much money they were able to add on a lot of things to the University. When my group first entered GMU we were like wow this is a beautiful place because it really attracts the students that visit there by whats being displayed on campus. Having a huge pond, streams run through the college and the building were all fantsy by having a lot of glass.

Students here could congregate and work on a project together, do something really small that doesnt cost all that much. But it cant be something really expensive at this point because Gallaudet doesn't have the money to do anything really big right now. In the future it will change and someday this campus will be a beautiful place. Its all about the college and how much money they have, reason why U of Maryland is really nice looking is they have money to do things they want. Gallaudet is still growing and we will reach that point someday where we could add a lot of nice things that will attract a lot of people.

Blog #4 Campus Citing

My thread Video by: Billy Bissell

Pg. 291 The Sports Taboo

While I was at George Mason University I saw some of the sports teams practicing and some of the sports practicing for during off season. The Sports Taboo on pg. 291 talks about how what race are good at sports, I think its totally right because not all black people are taking over football, baseball and basketball teams. When I saw the football team practice there were a lot of people in different race on the team, baseball was the same way it was fairly even. I dont know about the basketball team, but I know they are very good because they went to the final four a couple years back. What I am trying to say is this person wrote his article very well on what race plays sports and how they take up most of the team almost everyteam. But thats wrong, there are a lot of teams that are fairly even with color and sometime the team is all white. For an example last night for the NCAA mens basketball championship, Duke was playing Butler. Both teams started with 5 players on the floor and they were all white, other race of people arent on the floor. Yeah their are a lot of black players playing in sports now a days, but that still doesnt mean they are all on a team or taking a position up. Especially at D1 schools people are thinking that, but they are all not the same. Duke is the best basketball team in the nation and they have almost an all white team.

Pg. 484 Campuses in Place

When I first arrived around the campus of George Mason University. I said to my partners, Asif and Angelo "this place is beautiful" because how it is. It has amazing landscape jobs and its right in the middle of the woods, there are trees all around hiding the campus from the main road. You really cant even tell if the their is a George Mason University because its in the woods and its a huge campus. I wished Gallaudet was like that place because it would make the place so much better and relaxing. George Mason had a stream that ran all over the place around the campus and a huge pond. There were so many places to find to relax, do homework, study, eat or have a good chat with a friend. Why doesnt Gallaudet want to grow more trees and make it look nicer? It would not just look nicer, it would draw peoples attention to come here and possibly those people would want to come here for school because of the way it feels and makes them comfortble. George Mason is a very unique campus and I really like it because it feels like its a very comfortable place to be with many places to hang out and have a good time with friends.

Pg. 119 The structure of television encourages passive viewing

Here at Gallaudet University all the tv's are always on CNN. In the Cafeteria I want to change the channel sometime to something I would want to watch whenever no one else is watching or in the Cafe. The workers there tell me not to change it because I am not aloud to change it for right now. At George Mason I saw people changing the channel to what they want to watch, most of the time it was ESPN. Some brought XBOX 360's and plugged it into the tv right in the cafeteria and played games. In the topic sentence "encourages passive viewing". That only goes to something that what the people really like to watch by passion. They have a passion of viewing that show because they really like it. Here its the total opposite, no one cares about what you watch and they dont let you watch the show you really want to watch. Only place you can watch your show is in your dorm room. George Mason seemed to me so much more relaxed about things and willing to let you do anything you want in a good way, by letting you change the channel to watch your tv show that you want to watch.

Pg. 485 Qualities of Space and Building

The campus at George Mason University was very greensward and had a lot of trees to hide the university from the road. It was a very beautiful place, the building were mostly brick and with a metal outsiding. Windows on the buildings were very unique looking, they weren't the plain old boring clear color. They had yellow, light yellow and blueish colors. A lot of the buildings there had windows for a view so students could look out whenever they want and see the place full of nature, not a huge boring city with buildings and houses everywhere. All the building were similar, unlike Gallaudet having the building in 3 different styles. Having one all glassy looking, one brick and the other cement like structure. At George Mason they were all the same and it was a perfect match for the campus because it blended right in with the forest that was all around the University. I think all Colleges/Universities should stay with their culture and have the same looks instead of changing everything. Here at Gallaudet I would like them to change everything because right now everything is not so good looking on how the buildings look. I would like it all to be like the SLC the student learning center. Lots of nice things and kind of fantsy with glass windows and walls.

Pg. 87 Jonathan Silverman "signs"

Here at Gallaudet some of the places are confusing, when to stop or go. What street is what because they don't have any names to them. At George Mason they had everything, signs to every street, parking lot and dorm. They had street lights on campus instead of stop signs. It warns students there when to cross the road because of what the light color is. Here at Gallaudet all it is, is a stop sign. They cant hear and what if someone looked both ways and decided to go and someone was zipping right through the place, they would be dead. At George Mason they had street patrols that stood like cops in the road to controll the traffic so no one would get hurt. It was very easy to get lost on that campus because of the way its huge and we were new to the place, but it was a campus that I will never forget because it was such a nice place and it reminded me of home. With lots of trees, nature, calm and many places to relax.

Here is the Site of George Mason... just to show you that its a nice place just by looking at the front page.

Blog #3 Campus Map

My group has created a pretty cool campus with many creative ideas on what it should look like, we are all picking a part of campus and were gonna discuss that place. I chose the sports complex, because really im into sports and I thought to be creative and have it all professional looking. Not having crappy fields, looking dead and I thought to myself that it would be better because future players that get recruited to Gallaudet would see the sports complex and say, "wow I want to play there".
Right now I look at Gallaudet's sports complex and there needs to be a lot of work done! The football field is perfect, it has professional astro turf and bleachers for the fans to watch the games. Baseball and Softball is terrible because the field is in bad shape, lots of bumps and the students here don't care about the property. They let their pets do their thing on the field, I mean common have some respect for the players that play on the field, but it's all going to change for next season because were getting astro turf too. A professional mlb padded fence all the way around so no person can walk across the field, only the players and coaches can go onto the field For an example Dean Rader said administrators obsess about their physical plant because its main components like lawns, buildings, fountains, sculptures, statues, foliage and signs all send a message about the institution (Rader 77). He says that because thats what makes a good campus and draws people's attention to want to go to that University, College or Institute. Reason why I say this is we need more players that are good to come here, right now its starting to happen because we got Curtis Pride as a coach and he used to play in the MLB. How cool is that? Having a coach that used to play in the "Big Leagues". He is changing the program around big time, by getting a nice facility for the baseball field and the softball field. In the next two years the place is going to be beautiful because were going to have everything we could possibly ask for, professional everything for the sports programs. Thats what Gallaudet needs to do in order to play at the next level because all of that will bring in better players that would want to play here. My dream here is to win a "National Championship" in the next couple years and it very well could happen by how the sports programs are changing.
Thats what my ideal campus for the sports complex should look like, professional looking, no bad spots on the field or any of that. Have it a place that looks good and Gallaudet would get a lot more respect from the other people out in the world because they are turning the place into a nice way of profession. That will also make other players think, this is a nice place now and I want to play for this team and boost the program in the level of play. Thats what my thought of the sports complex should look like.

Winter Break

We got a lot of snow over the week that we had off. I am very used to this because I grew up all my life in the state of Maine, where they get a lot of snow during the winter time. I really enjoyed it because I really miss being away from home and I thought that I wasnt going to have a white winter anymore for the next three or four years because I am now down here. I think it's awesome that we got snow because it gives me memories of the good old times back in the day in my home state.

Here was very boring week and two days including the weekend because I really couldn't leave campus to do anything because I had baseball everyday, also I think we got a little to much snow. It gets me mad now that games are getting cancelled because of the amount of snow that we have got, now that it's melting its making everything wet and thats not baseball weather. So were going to have to wait a while for our season to really begin, but that's ok because I will now get more time for my knee to heal up. I did get sometime to get away from Gallaudet with some friends, I went to Mcdonalds with two of my friends during the snow storm. That really brought back some memories because in Maine me and my friends would always have snow ball fights and thats what we did the entire way to Mcdonalds.

I really enjoyed the week because I was able to get away from classes for a week and had lots of time to play baseball and get rest in. It was a very relaxing week for me and thats what I was planning on to have for a week since I saw the big storm comming. I really enjoyed it because I had more free time than ever so far here to hang out with my friends and do things what we usually do on a daily basis and I hope it happens again next winter because to bring back the good memories that I had in Maine with all the snow.

Blog #1 my dorm room

I just recently moved into another dorm room in Benson Hall because I wanted a new roommate and a bigger room. I really never thought of what happened in the room or who has lived in the room in the past.
I really cant sense the history in the room, all I see really when I walk in is the people that lived here in the past. They ate food, watched tv, did their homework, slept and there are other things but we wont go to deep into the thoughts. There is one thing that I did find out when me and my friend moved in was that the room was dirty, with a lot of dirt, tags from shirts and a lot of pieces of plastic. The people before also left things in the room such as a football, a squishy baseball and a phone charger, these people may have been not cared about anything about the room or their accessories. These people may have been lazy in a way with their things, I dont know what to say about the people way before that has lived in here because I couldn't find any evidence.
To make the place belong to me and my roommate for this next semester, we made it the way we wanted to make it look. We made it a sports room because we like sports, we hung jerseys up on the wall, posters on the wall, we just tried to make it like home by having it comfortable and cool. It became our room because we moved in and switched it all around like re-arranged everything the way we wanted it to be. We made it for anyone else to come in, anyone is welcome to come into the room, but some people may not like it because they may not be into the sports so much. We made it the way we wanted it because we wanted it to feel like home for us, since we live a long way's away from home.
