Pg. 291 The Sports Taboo
While I was at George Mason University I saw some of the sports teams practicing and some of the sports practicing for during off season. The Sports Taboo on pg. 291 talks about how what race are good at sports, I think its totally right because not all black people are taking over football, baseball and basketball teams. When I saw the football team practice there were a lot of people in different race on the team, baseball was the same way it was fairly even. I dont know about the basketball team, but I know they are very good because they went to the final four a couple years back. What I am trying to say is this person wrote his article very well on what race plays sports and how they take up most of the team almost everyteam. But thats wrong, there are a lot of teams that are fairly even with color and sometime the team is all white. For an example last night for the NCAA mens basketball championship, Duke was playing Butler. Both teams started with 5 players on the floor and they were all white, other race of people arent on the floor. Yeah their are a lot of black players playing in sports now a days, but that still doesnt mean they are all on a team or taking a position up. Especially at D1 schools people are thinking that, but they are all not the same. Duke is the best basketball team in the nation and they have almost an all white team.
Pg. 484 Campuses in Place
When I first arrived around the campus of George Mason University. I said to my partners, Asif and Angelo "this place is beautiful" because how it is. It has amazing landscape jobs and its right in the middle of the woods, there are trees all around hiding the campus from the main road. You really cant even tell if the their is a George Mason University because its in the woods and its a huge campus. I wished Gallaudet was like that place because it would make the place so much better and relaxing. George Mason had a stream that ran all over the place around the campus and a huge pond. There were so many places to find to relax, do homework, study, eat or have a good chat with a friend. Why doesnt Gallaudet want to grow more trees and make it look nicer? It would not just look nicer, it would draw peoples attention to come here and possibly those people would want to come here for school because of the way it feels and makes them comfortble. George Mason is a very unique campus and I really like it because it feels like its a very comfortable place to be with many places to hang out and have a good time with friends.
Pg. 119 The structure of television encourages passive viewing
Here at Gallaudet University all the tv's are always on CNN. In the Cafeteria I want to change the channel sometime to something I would want to watch whenever no one else is watching or in the Cafe. The workers there tell me not to change it because I am not aloud to change it for right now. At George Mason I saw people changing the channel to what they want to watch, most of the time it was ESPN. Some brought XBOX 360's and plugged it into the tv right in the cafeteria and played games. In the topic sentence "encourages passive viewing". That only goes to something that what the people really like to watch by passion. They have a passion of viewing that show because they really like it. Here its the total opposite, no one cares about what you watch and they dont let you watch the show you really want to watch. Only place you can watch your show is in your dorm room. George Mason seemed to me so much more relaxed about things and willing to let you do anything you want in a good way, by letting you change the channel to watch your tv show that you want to watch.
Pg. 485 Qualities of Space and Building
The campus at George Mason University was very greensward and had a lot of trees to hide the university from the road. It was a very beautiful place, the building were mostly brick and with a metal outsiding. Windows on the buildings were very unique looking, they weren't the plain old boring clear color. They had yellow, light yellow and blueish colors. A lot of the buildings there had windows for a view so students could look out whenever they want and see the place full of nature, not a huge boring city with buildings and houses everywhere. All the building were similar, unlike Gallaudet having the building in 3 different styles. Having one all glassy looking, one brick and the other cement like structure. At George Mason they were all the same and it was a perfect match for the campus because it blended right in with the forest that was all around the University. I think all Colleges/Universities should stay with their culture and have the same looks instead of changing everything. Here at Gallaudet I would like them to change everything because right now everything is not so good looking on how the buildings look. I would like it all to be like the SLC the student learning center. Lots of nice things and kind of fantsy with glass windows and walls.
Pg. 87 Jonathan Silverman "signs"
Here at Gallaudet some of the places are confusing, when to stop or go. What street is what because they don't have any names to them. At George Mason they had everything, signs to every street, parking lot and dorm. They had street lights on campus instead of stop signs. It warns students there when to cross the road because of what the light color is. Here at Gallaudet all it is, is a stop sign. They cant hear and what if someone looked both ways and decided to go and someone was zipping right through the place, they would be dead. At George Mason they had street patrols that stood like cops in the road to controll the traffic so no one would get hurt. It was very easy to get lost on that campus because of the way its huge and we were new to the place, but it was a campus that I will never forget because it was such a nice place and it reminded me of home. With lots of trees, nature, calm and many places to relax.
Here is the Site of George Mason... just to show you that its a nice place just by looking at the front page.
